| There
is no finer English village setting than at Salcombe Regis. Unspoilt and secluded,
it comes alive with the annual Country Fair. It is the home too of the famous
Donkey Sanctuary. Sidbury, with its lovely cottage frontages and gardens, is another
haven of tranquil village charm. No wonder it has won the Best Kept Village comptition
so many times. The traditional Sidbury Fair in September is held beside St. Giles
Church, open for guided tours on Thursday afternoons in summer. Downstream
is Sidford, famous for its Norman packhorse bridge. Dating from the 12th century,
it is a significant part of local history, not least as the location of a reported
skirmish in 1644 during the English Civil War. |
