History tells us fishing boats were built on the riverbank where catches of herring were hung out to dry. Before 1800 Sidmouth was a small fishing village with a population of 1200 clustered in tiny cottages near the beach. The RNLI once had a lifeboat here powered by sail and the muscle of fishermen.
Today, boats still fish from Port Royal where the town has its own twin-engined inshore rescue boat on 24 hour call. The Sailing Club hosts the regatta races and teaches boys and girls to sail. Such are the lessons that nourish a love of the sea.
